Studio photography with a gorgeous teenager
Studio Photography can be for any age from only a few days old to a nearly a whole century lived. Studio Photography is for every age and stage in life.
Emily came along to the Christchurch portrait studio for a studio photography session. This session was about totally celebrate her as a young woman. She came with her mother, who loved the idea of having some updated professional photographs of Emily. She wanted them to capture forever who Emily is now as an 11 year old. I wanted to make images that would show Emily’s personality, her laughter, her thoughtful moments and flickers of her beautiful soul.
We used both natural light and studio lighting. This gave variety to the images. Some look amazing in colour and have soft warm tones and other look amazing in black & white.
Emily, along with her peer, is into technology, fashion, music and the artists who are celebrities because of their high visibility status on all things media. But in the studio, Emily is who she is without a phone, without constant media and celebrity media bombarding her, and without any peer pressures which are so real at this age. She is who she is with gentle encouraging human interaction. I try and get her to relax and let her true self shine through.
Trying to be relaxed in this studio photography situation can be very hard. we are often self conscious when all attention is on us. we feel like we have to perform in some way, and we want to look our best. my job is to try and get you to forget about being in the studio and in from to a camera. it is to help you forget about that and just have a chat with me, feel free to move in a way that feels natural to you.
Emily did this beautifully. She was so easy to photograph even though i could tell she felt a bit unnerved being the centre of the cameras attention.
it may also have helped a lot that I had taught visual art to Emily at her school when she was 10, so we already knew each other pretty well.
Love teaching and photographing this age group. Young teenagers just blossoming into the beginnings of the young women they will grow into. It is such a special time, a fun time, but also an unsure and difficult time for some. Celebrating them and letting them experience and see how wonderful they are is the most meaningful part of this job as a portrait photographer.
